The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has dismissed a petition filed by YouTuber Ashen Senarathna challenging the National Election Commission’s decision to reject his nomination for the upcoming General Election.
Senarathna, a popular YouTuber who has also opened a chain of biriyani restauranets, had his independent group’s nomination from the Colombo District rejected by the Election Commission. The Commission stated that the nomination papers were submitted by an unauthorized individual, disqualifying the group.
In a video shared on social media, Senarathna voiced his frustration, explaining that he was present but asked to remain outside, leading another candidate to submit the papers in his place.
The Election Commission later clarified that nominations must be submitted by designated individuals, and failing to comply with this rule results in disqualification.
Following this, Ashen Senarathna filed a case with the Supreme Court, contesting the Commission’s decision, which has now been rejected.
