In light of recent warnings from the Sri Lanka Police regarding potential threats to tourists in Arugam Bay, the Russian Embassy in Colombo has urged Russian citizens to remain vigilant and avoid large gatherings. This follows an updated travel advisory issued by the United Kingdom and a security alert from the U.S. Embassy, advising American citizens to steer clear of the popular tourist destination.
The U.S. Embassy cited credible intelligence suggesting a possible attack targeting tourist hotspots in the area. In response, the U.S. has restricted its personnel from traveling to Arugam Bay and has strongly advised citizens to avoid the region until further notice.
In response to the heightened security threat, Sri Lanka Police have deployed approximately 500 police officers and Special Task Force (STF) personnel to safeguard the area. Additional roadblocks and periodic vehicle checks have been established to maintain security.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa clarified that recent intelligence pointed to a potential threat specifically targeting Israeli nationals, who frequent Arugam Bay and Pottuvil for surfing. However, he reassured the public that no similar threats have been identified in Colombo or other areas of the country.
Efforts are being made by intelligence agencies and security forces to strengthen safety measures in the region, and Sri Lankan authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
