Royal College has renewed the contract of its Rugby Head Coach, Dushantha Lewke, after a decade of remarkable success, with an impressive high percentage of an an overall win ratio. Lewke first joined the Royal College coaching staff in 2012 and was promoted to Head Coach in 2018. Since taking on the role, he has guided the team through an illustrious period, including league championships and multiple victories in the prestigious Bradby Shield encounters.
As an accomplished alumnus of Royal College, Lewke excelled as a loose forward at school, club, and national levels. In his first year as Head Coach, he led Royal to a Schools’ Rugby League title in 2018, repeating the feat in 2019. His coaching success extended beyond school rugby, as he recently led CR & FC to a League title in 2024, ending a two-decade-long drought for the club.
Recognizing his leadership and accomplishments, the Rugby Advisory and Management Committee of Royal College has decided to extend Lewke’s contract for the 2025 season, aiming for further success under his guidance.
Another remarkable statistic
Between 2018 and 2024, Royal College has consistently ranked in the top three of all Schools’ Rugby League tournaments, despite only five tournaments being held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the leadership of Head Coach Dushantha Lewke, who took the reins in 2018, the school secured two league championships. Royal College also claimed the prestigious Bradby Shield four times and the Gunaratne Trophy five times during this period.
In addition to athletic success, academic achievements have been equally impressive. Over 80% of the 1st XV players passed their A’Level exams, and more than 65% pursued higher education, obtaining degrees, diplomas, and professional qualifications. Many have also excelled in their careers.
On the rugby field, numerous players have progressed to represent clubs and Sri Lanka at both junior and senior levels, further showcasing the comprehensive development of the athletes under Coach Lewke’s guidance.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Royal College expressed their confidence, saying: “Dushanth Lewke has been reappointed as Head Coach for the 2025 season. As Vice Captain of the record-breaking Royal Team of 2002 and former Captain of Sri Lanka, his contributions have been invaluable. We wish him and his team continued success.”
