Security measures in Sri Lanka have been ramped up following a tip-off from Indian intelligence about a plot to attack Israeli tourists in the coastal town of Arugambay. The area, near Pothuvil in the Ampara district, is a major surfing hub and attracts large numbers of foreign visitors, including Israelis. The intelligence indicated that the planned attack, reportedly motivated by revenge for recent Israeli military actions against Hezbollah leaders, could be carried out between October 19 and 23.
The information provided by Indian intelligence identified two suspects involved in the plot, including one person from Iraq. The attackers were allegedly paid a contract of 50 lakh rupees to execute the plan. Names and other details of the suspects have been passed on to Sri Lankan authorities, who responded promptly by increasing security across the Eastern Province.
In particular, the police presence has been notably bolstered in Arugambay, with heightened monitoring of key areas where tourists gather. The security forces have also extended their precautionary measures to the southern province, including areas like Weligama and Galle, which are popular among Israeli travelers, as well as tourist-frequented places like Ella. Checkpoints, additional patrols, and surveillance have been set up to address any potential threats.
In light of the increased risk, the Israeli National Security Headquarters advised its citizens in Sri Lanka to leave Arugambay and other coastal areas, including Hikkaduwa, Galle, and Weligama, as soon as possible. The advisory also recommended avoiding public displays of Hebrew symbols or activities associated with Judaism, and encouraged individuals to relocate to regions under heavier police protection or to depart the country altogether.
In a broader reaction to the threat, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo has advised American citizens to steer clear of Arugambay. This announcement was quickly followed by similar warnings from the Russian Embassy, the British High Commission, and the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions, all of which updated their travel advisories for citizens in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka’s Acting Inspector General of Police has emphasized that a comprehensive security plan is being implemented to safeguard foreign tourists. Efforts include targeted security operations in critical areas to prevent potential incidents and to reassure visitors of their safety during their stay in the country. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while conducting investigations to identify further details of the plot and any additional suspects.
