A group of residents protested outside the Pamunugama Police Station on the evening of October 24, claiming that two young men detained by the police had been brutally assaulted while in custody. The protest led to heightened tensions near the station, according to reports.
The youths, aged 20 and 24, were arrested on October 20 in Seeduwa, suspected of involvement in a house break-in in Bopitiya and the theft of a gold necklace. However, family members and locals insist the youths were innocent and accuse the police of excessive force during their detention.
Following community outrage, the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Dungalpitiya Police Station intervened, leading to the youths’ admission to the Ragama Teaching Hospital for treatment. The OIC also assured residents that an investigation into the alleged assault would be conducted, after which the crowd dispersed peacefully.
