Tensions are escalating in the Nuwara Eliya district as supporters of the National People’s Force (NPF) have reportedly received death threats from a group aligned with the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA). According to the Police Station Commander, a formal complaint was lodged at the Bhagavanthalawa police station by two NPF supporters from the Hatton-Bhagavanthalawa area, who claim they were threatened with being hacked to death.
The threats allegedly occurred on the 24th during a meeting held at a private event hall in the Siripura area of Bhagavanthalawa. The gathering was intended to bolster support for the NPF candidates contesting in the upcoming election in the district. The incident marks a significant escalation in political tensions, as rivalry between different party supporters intensifies.
In response to the complaint, the Bhagavanthalawa Police have launched an operation to apprehend the two suspects accused of making the threats. The situation highlights the volatile nature of election-related conflicts in the region, where political rivalries can quickly turn dangerous. Authorities are now under pressure to ensure the safety of all involved and maintain peace during the campaign period.
