Mr. Dilith Jayaweera, leader of Sarvajan Power, emphasized the need for a transformed political culture in Sri Lanka during a recent meeting of the Universal Power in the Divulapitiya Constituency. He argued that by acting as an exemplary opposition, the Parliament can reflect the enlightened political culture expected by the people.
Speaking at the meeting on October 26, Jayaweera remarked, “Politics should not be about taking from the people but giving to them. In the past few decades, we have witnessed individuals coming to Parliament with questionable motives, often disconnected from the realities of the people they represent.”
He described the upcoming vote as a historic opportunity, urging citizens to support what he termed the “biggest opposition in Sri Lanka.” He pointed out that 68% of the electorate has expressed a desire to see a robust opposition, questioning why they previously awarded 43% of votes to the current government while a portion chose to stay home during elections.
Jayaweera called for bold leadership within the opposition, insisting that representatives should embody the aspirations of the 68% who seek change. He envisioned a Parliament that prioritizes meaningful discussions and strategic programs rather than traditional rhetoric, emphasizing the need for scholarly debates that resonate with the public.
“We aim to create a courageous opposition that will stand firm for the people and not allow them to suffer in the coming five years,” he stated.
The meeting in Atthanagalla further solidified his vision for a proactive and engaged opposition that can drive change in the political landscape of Sri Lanka.
