President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the need for a fundamental change in the current political movement to effectively build the country. Speaking at a public rally in Kalutara, he expressed concern that politics has become unappealing to the people.
“We have a lot of work to do. First of all, we need to change the politics in our country in order to build this country,” he stated. The President criticized the current state of politics, describing it as largely transactional and pointing to the chaotic behavior often displayed in Parliament, where lawmakers have resorted to bringing items like chili powder and knives during disputes.
He also remarked on the urgency of the upcoming November 14 event, which he characterized as a critical effort to “clean the parliament.”
In his address, President Dissanayake outlined plans for a streamlined cabinet, proposing to limit its size to fewer than 25 members. He highlighted the importance of political leadership within Parliament for the transformation of the country and stated that the National People’s Power must gain more influence there.
The President affirmed that ministries would be allocated scientifically, with a focus on accountability and integrity. He noted that those serving in government roles would be expected to contribute meaningfully without receiving salaries, emphasizing a commitment to philanthropy and national interest.
