Julie Chang, the American ambassador to Sri Lanka, clarified that there has been no change to the tourism advisory previously issued for the country. Speaking at an event at the American Center in Colombo, she dismissed claims of a travel ban as “fake news.”
Ambassador Chang stated that if the American embassy becomes aware of any security threats, it is their responsibility to inform embassy staff, American citizens, and the relevant Sri Lankan authorities. “We do not follow a double policy in this regard; this is the standard procedure we adhere to globally,” she explained.
Regarding recent concerns about the Arugambe area, she noted that the embassy promptly informed Sri Lankan authorities upon discovering the threat, and the response from local officials was swift. “We are actively collaborating with them and exchange ideas on a daily basis,” she added, expressing appreciation for the cooperation with Sri Lankan leadership and security personnel.
Ambassador Chang emphasized the commitment to transparency shown by Sri Lankan officials and reiterated that the travel advisory for American citizens remains unchanged. “It has been consistent for many years and is similar to advisories for countries like Italy and France, all of which are rated at Level 2,” she concluded.
