The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that two individuals, initially detained over suspected plans to target a tourist site in Sri Lanka, will remain in custody for further interrogation. The arrests follow intelligence warnings about potential terrorist activity aimed at a popular tourist attraction in the country.
Investigation officers submitted a confidential progress report to Additional Magistrate Pasan Amarasena on October 29, who instructed the TID to continue updates as the inquiry advances.
The case gained urgency after Israel’s national Security Council issued an emergency advisory on October 23, cautioning its citizens to vacate popular southern Sri Lankan tourist zones. Labeling Arugam Bay as a “level four” risk, the advisory recommended heightened vigilance, urging Israeli nationals to conceal their Jewish identity and avoid large gatherings. Similar warnings have been released by the Russian and UK embassies, advising their citizens to remain cautious and avoid crowded areas.
Following these alerts, Sri Lankan authorities intensified security measures at key tourist locations, including Arugam Bay, where police investigations led to the detention of three suspects connected to the incident.
