Colombo, Sri Lanka ( October 30, 2024)– The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has dismissed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition challenging the candidacy of Ranjan Ramanayake in the 2024 General Election. Ramanayake, a popular actor who transitioned into politics, faced legal scrutiny over his eligibility to contest, but the court has now ruled to dismiss the petition without holding a hearing.
The FR petition was filed by parties questioning Ramanayake’s right to run for public office, arguing potential grounds of ineligibility. However, the Supreme Court’s decision not to proceed with a hearing effectively clears Ramanayake to continue his campaign unhindered.
The dismissal marks a significant legal win for Ramanayake and his supporters, as he pushes forward in his political journey, aiming to translate his popularity as an entertainer into a meaningful impact in the political arena.
