Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed concerns over the government’s decision to revoke the privileges granted to former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa. In a statement, Wickremesinghe said he is willing to forgo his own privileges but questioned the rationale behind targeting those of his predecessors.
Wickremesinghe highlighted the violent history involving the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), referencing the assassination of Chandrika’s husband and an assassination attempt that left her injured. He noted, “Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has never supported me. We have only worked together to support Maithripala Sirisena.”
Regarding Mahinda Rajapaksa, Wickremesinghe acknowledged the former president’s declining popularity but emphasized that his role in ending the civil war necessitates continued protection and privileges. He urged the government to reconsider its actions and to keep the privileges of both Chandrika and Mahinda intact.
Wickremesinghe cautioned against government interference in parliamentary matters, asserting that such significant changes should require a referendum. He reiterated his commitment to upholding the dignity and rights of former leaders, regardless of their political affiliations.
