Colombo (November 1, 2024) – The Presidential Office has officially addressed recent media reports suggesting that the security detail and benefits of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa have been reduced. In a statement released today, the Presidential Media Unit clarified that all such reports are false, emphasizing that Rajapaksa continues to receive full entitlements as provided under the President’s Entitlement Act No. 4 of 1986.
According to the statement, Rajapaksa is entitled to a retired president’s pension, an official residence, a secretarial allowance, and the use of three vehicles: a 2008 Mercedes-Benz Maybach, a 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser, and a 2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. The former president is allotted 1,950 liters of fuel per month for these vehicles, along with three designated drivers.
In terms of security, Rajapaksa’s protection is coordinated by the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Public Security, with 180 police officers, including 29 police drivers, deployed for his safety. This team is supplemented by military personnel from both the army and navy.
The statement further noted that a cabinet subcommittee has been appointed to review and assess the privileges of former presidents. Any changes or adjustments will be based on the committee’s recommendations.
The Presidential Office concluded by urging the public to disregard unverified reports and assured that the government remains committed to providing adequate security and support to former presidents.
