The People’s Struggle Alliance has urged the government to cancel all microfinance loans totaling $ 85 million, citing ongoing hardship for women borrowers. At a press conference held in Nugegoda, Badulla District group leader Nirosha Guruge highlighted the severe impact these loans have had on women, including lawsuits, loss of assets, and even cases of suicide. Guruge emphasized that the government should prioritize canceling these debts to support vulnerable women rather than allowing tax evasion by large corporations. She noted that many women working in plantations and overseas bring significant income to the country, yet remain financially burdened due to the microfinance crisis.
“Women helped bring this government to power, expecting a shift in economic justice, especially around the microfinance issue,” said Guruge, urging the government to take decisive action. The Alliance is calling for a powerful movement to hold the government accountable, aiming to empower women and seek solutions against systemic economic oppression.
