Sri Lanka emerged victorious at the Hong Kong Sixes Cricket Tournament after a seven-year break, clinching the championship by defeating Pakistan in the final match. The Pakistani team, batting first, scored a challenging 72 runs in just 3.5 overs. However, Sri Lanka responded assertively, achieving 76 runs in the fifth over to secure the win, despite losing three wickets along the way.
Opening batsman Sandun Weerakkodi led Sri Lanka’s charge with a dynamic 34 runs off just 13 balls, featuring four sixes and one four. Captain Lahiru Madhusanka contributed significantly with a swift 19 runs off only 5 balls, while Tharindu Ratnayake remained unbeaten with a valuable 16 runs off 4 balls, guiding the team to victory.
This victory is historic for Sri Lanka, marking their second championship win in the Hong Kong Sixes Tournament, the first being 17 years ago in 2007. The Sri Lankan team has previously reached the runner-up position twice, in 1993 and 2004.
The Hong Kong Sixes, launched in 1992 and overseen by the Hong Kong Cricket Association, returned this year for the first time since 2017, bringing together 12 competitive teams in a fast-paced six-a-side format.
