In a recent election rally held in Nuwara Eliya, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake revealed that previous presidents have had the privilege of consuming organic vegetables grown in the area. He emphasized that these vegetables are delivered to the Presidential Secretariat on a weekly basis, highlighting a disparity between the privileges afforded to former leaders and the everyday realities faced by ordinary citizens.
“I found out that organic vegetables were being cultivated on the premises of the Presidential House in Nuwara Eliya, specifically for the enjoyment of the President. Every Friday, 60 kg of these vegetables are transported to the Presidential Secretariat,” President Dissanayake stated. He further mentioned that he has directed officials to repurpose these vegetables for meals prepared for security personnel, underlining a commitment to using local produce.
The President criticized the previous administration, asserting that former leaders did not utilize the fresh produce meant for the general populace. He pointed out that, despite electoral defeats, they still appear to expect special treatment and privileges, which he finds concerning.
Dissanayake’s comments reflect a broader criticism of political elites in Sri Lanka, underscoring the need for leaders to engage more closely with the needs and conditions of ordinary citizens. He reiterated his commitment to addressing the issues facing the common people and building a government that prioritizes their welfare over the privileges of former leaders.
