Former President Ranil Wickremsinghe has expressed serious concerns about the potential for Sri Lanka to face another crisis if experienced leadership is not elected to Parliament. Speaking in Colombo, he highlighted the current government’s lack of seasoned politicians and called for knowledgeable leaders to ensure stability and avoid future turmoil.
Wickremsinghe, who has a long history in Sri Lankan politics, noted, “I was in Parliament before, and I believe that now we should form a new group from our ranks. These are the only experienced people in the country.” He underscored the importance of having veteran politicians who understand the complexities of governance, especially in challenging economic times.
Reflecting on the recovery efforts following the country’s recent economic crisis, he stated that his team had worked diligently over the past few years to restore stability. “Our efforts in recovering from bankruptcy are globally unparalleled,” he claimed, emphasizing the significant progress made under his leadership.
However, he cautioned that the absence of experienced MPs in the new Parliament could pose a serious risk to the nation’s stability. Drawing a parallel to a tragic recent incident, Wickremsinghe compared the potential for chaos to the Kotalawala Defense University bus accident, which resulted in the deaths of two female students. “Just as that accident highlights the need for careful management and oversight, so too does our political landscape require knowledgeable leaders to steer the country away from danger.”
Wickremsinghe’s comments come as the country navigates a complex recovery process, and his call for experienced leadership resonates with many who seek stability and growth for Sri Lanka in the coming years.
