The investigation into the abandoned luxury jeep found in Digana, Kandy, has led authorities to arrest the chief custodian of the Galthanna Dewala shrine, with indications of a link to politician Lohan Ratwatte. The vehicle, discovered by Theldeniya police, is registered under Ratwatte’s office, though it was reportedly transferred to the Chief Custodian through Ratwatte’s private secretary. This raised immediate suspicions, prompting police to launch a deeper investigation into the Chief Custodian’s assets and connections.
Upon initial questioning, the Chief Custodian claimed that the vehicle had been entrusted to him only three months prior by a personal bodyguard of Mr. Ratwatte, who has since passed away. However, records and testimonies suggest that the Chief Custodian may have been using the jeep for more than a year, casting doubt on the timeline he provided.
In the course of the investigation, police uncovered that the Chief Custodian manages a car yard with 16 luxury vehicles. This fleet includes a mix of high-end brands and models typically out of reach for individuals in his position. Authorities are now examining ownership documents, registration history, and import records to determine if the vehicles were legally acquired. There are concerns that some of these vehicles may have been brought in under questionable circumstances, potentially bypassing import duties or even having ties to misappropriated funds.
The Chief Custodian was presented in court following his arrest and has been remanded in custody until November 11. This additional time will allow the authorities to pursue the ongoing investigation, particularly focusing on the nature of his relationship with Ratwatte, the legitimacy of his car collection, and whether any financial or material support might have influenced his role at the shrine. Police are also expanding the investigation to track the sources of funds for these luxury vehicles, as there is speculation that the Chief Custodian may be part of a larger network involved in asset mismanagement and money laundering.
The incident has raised public concern, as it highlights potential misuse of political influence and connections, possibly implicating prominent figures in a network of hidden assets and unregulated transactions. The investigation continues, and authorities are expected to reveal further findings as they gather more evidence regarding the financial trails connected to Ratwatte and the Chief Custodian.
