Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently commented on Sri Lanka’s relationship with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and offered advice to the current President regarding economic management. Speaking at a rally in Galle for New Democratic Front candidates, Wickremesinghe highlighted the importance of the IMF program for economic stability and urged the President to clarify his approach to it.
He suggested that if the President lacks a full understanding of the IMF’s program requirements, he should seek guidance from experienced advisors, referring to himself as a “grandfather” figure. Wickremesinghe also noted that while the President has mentioned securing the third installment of IMF funds by November, it’s essential to clearly communicate to the public whether the government will proceed with or reconsider the IMF agreement.
These remarks underscore ongoing debates about Sri Lanka’s economic strategy amid efforts to stabilize the economy, with Wickremesinghe emphasizing transparency in the government’s economic policies and IMF commitments.
