President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced a new government initiative aimed at eliminating the drug trade and underworld activities, promising to restore security in the country. Speaking at an election rally in Kegalle, Dissanayake revealed that discussions have already taken place with the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security and senior officials to design a comprehensive program for this mission.
The president emphasized that in the past, drug campaigns were often supported by politicians and certain police officers, leading to widespread corruption. He assured that the National People’s Power government is now committed to eradicating this issue by ensuring that the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their status.
The initiative also aims to address the misuse of public funds, eliminate tax evasion, and hold those responsible for past fraud and corruption accountable. Furthermore, Dissanayake announced that clear guidelines would be established regarding the privileges of former presidents, with a focus on standardizing the political system.
On the issue of former presidents’ privileges, President Dissanayake stated that the National People’s Force government would revoke any illegal entitlements that exceeded those granted by the constitution, acts, or circulars. He emphasized that this move is not about political revenge but about ensuring fairness and transparency.
Under the new system, former presidents will be required to apply for any government facilities, such as housing, by submitting formal applications and justifications for such requests. This change is part of broader efforts to create a more equitable and accountable governance framework.
