Welimada, Sri Lanka – Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary, Tilvin Silva, stressed the critical need for parliamentary collaboration in building a prosperous nation. Speaking at a National People’s Forces campaign event in the Welimada area, Silva acknowledged the considerable achievement of Mr. Anura Dissanayake in the recent presidential election, calling it a “significant victory.” However, he emphasized that this win, though meaningful, does not equate to complete public endorsement, nor does it guarantee the ability to enact meaningful change in isolation.
“A president alone cannot change the country,” Silva asserted, underscoring that without the backing of parliamentary seats, even the best plans could be hindered by lack of legislative support. He explained that the JVP’s set of policies, aimed at economic development, social reform, and governance improvement, could only be fully realized with a supportive parliament that could pass laws and endorse necessary reforms.
Silva also highlighted the JVP’s commitment to policies focused on equitable growth, tackling corruption, and addressing systemic inefficiencies. He argued that the role of the legislative body is essential to advancing these goals, as the parliament’s power enables the crafting and enforcement of laws that shape daily governance and long-term policies.
This message comes as part of the JVP’s ongoing push to expand its influence within both the presidency and parliament, aiming to secure enough representation to make tangible changes to Sri Lanka’s political and economic landscape. Silva’s remarks reflect the party’s strategic approach in urging voters to consider the balance of power in government, particularly as the country approaches upcoming parliamentary elections.
