Colombo, Sri Lanka – After months of suspension, train travel between Colombo Fort and Thalaimannar has officially resumed as of November 12, 2024, following the completion of a major railway development project. The project focused on upgrading the line between Mahawa and Anuradhapura, aimed at enhancing the infrastructure, speed, and safety standards of the rail network along the northern route.
The reinstated service reopens a key transportation route, which is crucial for both local communities and travelers looking to access northern Sri Lanka. This resumption is anticipated to reinvigorate trade, tourism, and economic engagement in the area by providing reliable transportation to Thalaimannar, the port town situated at the northwestern tip of Sri Lanka and historically significant as a gateway for trade and travel.
The Railway Department shared the new schedule, allowing passengers to plan accordingly:
- Colombo Fort to Thalaimannar: Daily departures at 16.15 hours reaching Thalaimannar at 22.15 hours
- Thalaimannar to Colombo Fort: Starting November 13, trains will leave Thalaimannar at 04.15 hours arriving in Colombo Fort at 10:15 hours
The revival of the Thalaimannar line promises greater accessibility for residents, including those in rural and suburban areas along the route, and is expected to reduce travel costs for many who rely on public transportation. This connectivity plays a vital role in encouraging the exchange of goods and services, while also allowing for more seamless travel for pilgrims, students, and workers commuting between Colombo and the north.
The Department expressed optimism about future railway expansions, with ongoing projects aimed at improving the nationwide network, facilitating regional growth, and providing an alternative to road travel. For now, the Colombo Fort-Thalaimannar train resumption marks a significant milestone in restoring traditional rail routes that continue to serve as lifelines for communities across Sri Lanka.
