Tilvin Silva, the General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), addressed the media today after the National People’s Power (NPP) secured a resounding victory in the 2024 General Election. Silva assured the public that the NPF, despite its overwhelming mandate of 159 seats in Parliament, would not be “intoxicated” by its newfound power.
In his remarks at the press conference, Silva clarified that the NPP had not actively sought such a large mandate, but the people’s trust in them was now clear. The landslide victory, according to Silva, reflects the hope the people have placed in the party to bring about meaningful change.
Silva also reflected on the misuse of power by past governments, stating that those who gained significant political control in Sri Lanka’s history often used it for personal or partisan interests, to the detriment of the public. In a direct contrast, Silva promised that the NPP government would not follow this precedent. He emphasized that the NPP would prioritize using its power to better the country and improve the lives of its citizens.
The NPP’s victory has raised expectations among the Sri Lankan people, and Silva’s comments reinforced their commitment to leading with integrity and accountability. With the party now in control of a substantial portion of Parliament, the NPP’s ability to enact change is seen as a significant turning point in Sri Lanka’s political landscape.
