For the first time in history, the National People’s Power (NPP) has made significant inroads in Nuwara Eliya district, a region traditionally dominated by political stalwarts like Thondaman, Digambaram, and Radhakrishnan. This historic achievement was highlighted by Ms. Krishnan Kalaichelvi, who was elected to Parliament from the Nuwara Eliya district, during a press conference held at the party office in Hatton on November 16.
Ms. Kalaichelvi emphasized that this victory was the result of a unified effort by the Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities in the district, who rallied behind the NPP’s vision for change. She criticized previous politicians in the region for neglecting the needs of the plantation community, accusing them of making empty promises during election campaigns and failing to deliver meaningful solutions.
“These leaders would come to the plantations only during election time, mislead the people to secure votes, and then vanish without addressing their grievances,” she said. In contrast, Ms. Kalaichelvi assured that the NPP is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people and ensuring their trust in the party is not misplaced.
Ms. Kalaichelvi’s election is also notable as she received an impressive 33,346 votes, reflecting a significant shift in the political landscape of the district. The press conference was attended by a large number of supporters who gathered at the party office to congratulate her on her victory.
The NPP’s success in Nuwara Eliya is seen as a major political breakthrough, signaling the potential for broader change in regions traditionally controlled by entrenched political factions. Ms. Kalaichelvi reaffirmed her commitment to addressing the long-standing challenges faced by the plantation community and working towards a more equitable future for all residents of the district.
