Following the 2024 general election, political parties have been directed to submit their national list nominations to the Election Commission promptly. Here’s how the allocation of National List Members of Parliament (MPs) is distributed across the political spectrum:
National People’s Power (NPP)
The NPP, which secured the most seats in the election, is expected to unveil its national list appointments tomorrow (17). As the dominant party in the new parliament, the NPP’s selections are highly anticipated.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)
The SJB has secured five National List MP positions. However, the party has yet to finalize its nominations, with deliberations reportedly ongoing.
New Democratic Front (NDF)
The NDF won two National List MP positions. Discussions regarding the appointments were held today at former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s political office on Mal Road, Colombo.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)
The SLPP is entitled to one National List MP. The party has decided to nominate Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, its National Organizer, for the position.
Sarvajana Balaya
Sarvajana Balaya, a newly established party that contested this year, has successfully secured one National List MP. The party’s National Executive Committee will meet tomorrow to finalize the nomination.
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) & Ilankei Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK)
Both the SLMC and ITAK have won one National List MP each. ITAK is set to announce its nomination tomorrow, according to party insiders.
The process of appointing National List MPs is a crucial step in shaping the composition of the new parliament. These appointments often represent party strategists, experts, and influential figures who did not contest in the election but can contribute significantly to policymaking.
