Sagara Kariyawasam, the Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has called on the government to fulfill its promises to the people, particularly regarding tax reductions. Speaking at a press conference held at the SLPP headquarters, Kariyawasam emphasized that the two-thirds parliamentary majority granted to the government leaves no room for excuses in addressing public concerns.
“VAT cannot be reduced for so long. Petrol prices cannot be reduced. They complain that there is no power in the Parliament. There is nothing to complain about now. The people have given two-thirds power,” he said. Kariyawasam urged the government to immediately lower taxes and reduce the burden of high living costs on citizens, as pledged during the election campaign.
This statement comes amidst growing public dissatisfaction over rising costs of living, with critics accusing the government of failing to act decisively despite its strong legislative mandate. Kariyawasam’s comments are seen as a push for the government to prioritize economic relief measures, including reducing VAT and fuel prices, which have remained high despite earlier promises.
The SLPP has also faced internal pressure to implement swift economic reforms, particularly as the country continues to navigate financial challenges exacerbated by inflation and external debt.
