Ambika Samuel, a newly elected Member of Parliament, has expressed strong confidence in the potential of young people, particularly from the plantation communities, to actively engage in politics. As the first Tamil MP from Watukara to be elected through a major political party, Samuel sees her entry into politics not only as a personal achievement but also as a symbol of hope for others who wish to break into political leadership.
Samuel emphasized that her political journey marks the beginning of a new chapter for young people in the plantation sector, who she believes have long been restricted by outdated societal frameworks. “I am the first to enter politics from here, and my brothers and sisters will surely follow that step in the future. These are young people with tremendous talent and a genuine desire to serve the country. For a long time, they were stuck in certain limits, but now those barriers have been broken. We can expect a new wave of leadership from the hills and other districts,” Samuel shared.
Her vision for the future includes a shift in the opportunities available to youth, particularly in the plantation communities, who are often sidelined in the political sphere. She believes that her success represents the breaking down of long-standing barriers, encouraging others to step into leadership roles with confidence and drive.
Samuel also took the opportunity to highlight the crucial role of women in politics, noting that they have historically been confined to traditional roles, especially in domestic spheres. “Women are often confined to the kitchen, but most of them are capable of many things. They have great potential, but their influence has been limited by social expectations,” Samuel said. She expressed hope that her entry into politics would inspire more women to take on leadership positions, not just in Parliament but also in other sectors.
“I am confident that more women will rise to leadership positions, both in Parliament and beyond, as we move forward,” Samuel added. She believes that her political journey will pave the way for a future where young people and women, especially those from marginalized communities, will have more opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
