Authorities at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium have decided to ban spectators from climbing trees to watch international cricket matches. The decision comes after a growing number of fans, unable to secure tickets, resorted to climbing tall trees in the ‘F’ zone of the stadium for a better view of the games.
According to sources within the stadium management, this practice had become increasingly common, leading to safety concerns. In response, stadium officials have announced plans to erect physical barriers to prevent tree climbing. Warning signs will also be posted to inform spectators about the dangers associated with such actions.
A Dambulla stadium official confirmed that a Kohomba tree in the ‘F’ zone had already been uprooted for safety reasons. Additionally, a nearby Myla tree, frequently used by spectators for climbing, is reported to be in poor condition and at risk of collapse.
These measures have been in place since the first one-day international match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on November 13, with authorities emphasizing the need for spectator safety.
