The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Senior Mission Chief recently met with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as confirmed by Shehan Semasinghe, Sri Lanka’s former State Minister of Finance. Semasinghe shared the update on the social media platform X, highlighting the positive tone of the discussions.
According to Semasinghe, the IMF team commended the efforts made by the previous government under Wickremesinghe’s leadership to recover Sri Lanka’s economy from its worst crisis. The IMF acknowledged the progress in stabilizing the country and setting it on a trajectory toward sustainable growth.
The IMF delegation arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday, November 17, and is scheduled to remain until November 23 to conduct the third review of Sri Lanka’s economic reform program, which is part of its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement with the IMF.
During the meetings, Semasinghe emphasized the importance of maintaining policy continuity, safeguarding the reforms that have been made, and ensuring that these gains are not undone in order to secure long-term economic stability and development for Sri Lanka.
