Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has announced that the new government will proceed with the appointment of 26 to 28 deputy ministers in the coming days. These appointments are expected to be made within the next 24 to 48 hours. However, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to the promises made in their pre-election manifesto, stating that no state ministers will be appointed, contrary to the practice in previous administrations.
In an update to the media, Jayatissa emphasized that while the new administration would be appointing two deputy ministers for some cabinet ministries, this would not apply to all ministries. The decision to limit the number of deputy ministers is part of the government’s broader strategy to streamline the cabinet and reduce the size of the administrative structure, in line with the pledges made during their election campaign.
Jayatissa further clarified that the government is focused on strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of its ministries without creating additional layers of state ministers. This move is seen as an effort to adhere to the promises made to the public, ensuring that the government’s structure is both cost-effective and responsive to the needs of the people.
The new appointments are expected to enhance the functioning of the cabinet while maintaining the government’s commitment to reduce the number of political appointees.
