The Sri Lankan Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, came under attack today as a series of rockets fired by Hezbollah struck the building. The attack caused significant damage to parts of the embassy, with several offices located on the lower floors of the building severely affected. According to Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Israel, Mr. Nimal Bandara, the explosion from the rockets caused extensive destruction to the offices and infrastructure within the embassy complex.
In addition to the damage at the embassy, a nearby bus was completely destroyed by the fires ignited by the rocket strikes. The destruction of the bus highlights the severity of the attack and the potential for further damage to surrounding areas. Fortunately, despite the destruction, Ambassador Bandara confirmed that no Sri Lankan nationals were injured in the incident. The embassy staff, including diplomatic personnel, were reported to be unharmed.
Ambassador Bandara further stated that while parts of the building were damaged in the attacks, the embassy’s operations continued without interruption. Activities at the embassy resumed as usual the following day, with the necessary safety measures taken to ensure the well-being of staff members.
The rocket attack by Hezbollah is part of the broader tensions in the region and underscores the volatile security situation in Israel. The Sri Lankan government is in communication with local authorities to ensure the safety of its diplomatic staff and to assess the extent of the damage. Although the embassy has been impacted, the incident has not led to any casualties among Sri Lankan citizens or embassy personnel.
