Professor Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious, and Cultural Affairs, expressed his commitment to revitalizing the cultural values of Sri Lankan society, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic recovery with cultural enrichment. Speaking to the media after officially assuming office, he highlighted the pressing need to address the erosion of cultural integrity alongside economic challenges.
“Our government is determined to stabilize the collapsed economy and restore the material lives of our citizens, but that alone is insufficient,” Minister Senevi stated. “I have observed the cultural decline that has affected every community in Sri Lanka—Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, and others. Our nation has fallen into a cultural abyss, and it is essential that we lift ourselves out of it.”
The minister underlined his belief that cultural rejuvenation is just as critical as economic recovery for the nation’s progress. “I have the greatest hope and confidence that we can elevate the cultural life of all Sri Lankans to noble heights. This requires collective effort and the support of the entire nation,” he added.
Minister Senevi’s remarks suggest that the government intends to pursue a holistic approach to governance, blending economic, social, and cultural strategies to create a balanced and sustainable future for Sri Lanka. He called on citizens to unite in this endeavor, underscoring the importance of cultural pride and unity in the country’s journey toward recovery.
