Tushari Jayasinghe, a newly elected Member of Parliament from the Kandy District representing the National People’s Power (NPP), shared her journey into politics and emphasized her commitment to the public.
Addressing the media, Ms. Jayasinghe highlighted that she has no prior experience in active politics and has never held any position in local councils. Despite her lack of political background, she considers her election to Parliament a significant victory for the people.
“I had no personal aspirations of entering Parliament,” she stated. “This outcome is purely the voice and victory of the people.” Ms. Jayasinghe revealed that she spent approximately one lakh rupees from her own funds during the general election campaign, underscoring her grassroots approach to politics.
Reflecting on the current political climate, she warned that her government must prioritize the people’s needs above all else. “If our government does not deliver for the people, we will be sent home even faster than the previous administration,” she said, affirming her party’s accountability to the public.
When questioned about the privileges MPs often receive, including official residences, Ms. Jayasinghe acknowledged that an official house might sometimes be necessary for effective governance. However, she clarified that she has made no formal request for one. “My focus is on serving the people, not on personal benefits,” she added.
Her remarks come at a time when the public is closely scrutinizing the perks and privileges afforded to elected representatives. Many see her comments as a refreshing take on political responsibility and an assurance of transparency.
Ms. Jayasinghe’s election marks a shift towards new, people-centric leadership, reflecting the NPP’s promise to break away from traditional politics and prioritize public welfare.
