Excavations are currently underway in the Veyangoda-Wandurawa area, located near the construction site of the Central Expressway, following a court order issued by the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court. The site has long been rumored to house hidden treasure, with treasure hunters attempting to dig up the area on several occasions over the years. However, previous investigations by the Department of Archaeology had concluded that there was no treasure to be found.
Despite this, recent excavations have revealed an unexpected discovery—a large stone at a depth of 20 feet, which is now at the center of the latest investigation. This new find has led to renewed interest in the site, prompting the police and several government agencies, including the Department of Archaeology, to intervene. After reporting the discovery to the court, the authorities have decided to take further action to investigate the find.
In light of the large stone uncovered, plans are now in motion to blow up the stone trove. The purpose of this action is to determine whether there are additional objects or structures hidden beneath the stone, which may explain its unusual size and positioning.
The discovery has sparked new speculation among locals and treasure hunters, despite earlier conclusions from the Department of Archaeology that the area did not contain any valuable treasure. The ongoing operation is being closely monitored by authorities to ensure safety and proper handling of the situation, as the true nature of the stone trove remains a mystery.
