Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, accompanied by key members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), met with representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today to discuss Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and the future of the country’s IMF agreement. The meeting highlighted the need to modify the terms of the loan agreement signed under the previous government to better align with the democratic will of the Sri Lankan people, Premadasa stated.
Premadasa emphasized that the nation, now under a new public mandate, should have a say in shaping the economic recovery strategy. He called for an agreement that reflects the current political landscape and addresses the needs of ordinary citizens, particularly in light of the ongoing economic crisis.
Alongside Premadasa, other SJB members such as Dr. Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne, Harshana Rajakaruna, S.M. Marikkar, Mujibur Rahuman, and Dr. Kavinda Jayawardena were present. Senior academics, including Professor Kennedy Gunawardena and Professor Prasanna Perera from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, also participated in the discussions, offering valuable insights into economic policy and potential reforms to the existing agreement.
The meeting underscores the opposition’s proactive stance in shaping Sri Lanka’s economic future, with a particular focus on ensuring that the IMF’s conditions do not exacerbate the hardships faced by the Sri Lankan public.
