The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has confirmed that it has granted an extension to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to submit its proposals for the revision of electricity tariffs. The extension allows the CEB until January 6 to finalize and present its recommendations.
The decision to grant the extension was made following a formal request from the CEB, citing the need for additional time to prepare comprehensive proposals that align with financial and operational requirements. The PUCSL stated that while the original deadline was earlier, this extension aims to ensure a thorough review of all necessary data before implementation.
Consequently, the PUCSL has informed the CEB that approval for any proposed changes to electricity tariffs will not be possible until January 17. This delay implies that consumers may need to wait longer for any potential adjustments to their electricity bills, whether reductions or increases, depending on the proposals submitted.
The revision of electricity tariffs remains a critical issue as the government seeks to balance consumer affordability with the financial sustainability of the CEB. Industry analysts suggest that the extended timeline could also provide more opportunities for public consultation and scrutiny of the proposed changes.
