Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, has hailed the recent visit of the globally renowned music group ABBA to Sri Lanka as a tremendous honor and a milestone for the country’s tourism sector. Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister expressed his pride in facilitating the event, emphasizing that such international cultural engagements are vital for enhancing Sri Lanka’s image and attracting global attention.
Herath highlighted the importance of the visit, stating that the presence of a group as iconic as ABBA reflects the country’s growing potential as a cultural and tourist destination. “ABBA’s visit is a significant achievement for Sri Lanka, and it has been warmly welcomed by people across the country. Events like these are essential for promoting tourism, and I was personally involved in making sure it happened,” he said.
Reflecting on his personal connection with ABBA’s music, Herath shared that he has been an avid listener since his childhood. “I’ve been listening to ABBA since I was a child, so this isn’t anything new or magical for us,” he remarked. According to him, ABBA’s songs were a staple during his school days, and he continues to appreciate their music to this day. “For those of us who grew up with their music, their presence here feels familiar and exciting at the same time.”
The Minister also responded to critics who have downplayed the significance of ABBA’s visit, suggesting that some people fail to understand the broader cultural and economic benefits of such events. “There are always those who look at these things with skepticism, calling it unnecessary or overhyped. But for Sri Lanka, it’s a chance to showcase our country on a global stage and attract a new wave of international tourists,” Herath explained.
He further noted that events like ABBA’s visit contribute to the government’s broader strategy to revitalize the tourism industry, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years due to economic instability and global travel disruptions. “We need to focus on cultural diplomacy and global events to rebrand Sri Lanka as a vibrant, welcoming destination. ABBA’s visit is just the beginning of many such initiatives aimed at putting Sri Lanka back on the world map,” he concluded.
