Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has officially assumed the role of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Greg Barclay, who held the position since 2020. Shah’s appointment marks a significant moment in cricket governance, as he brings extensive experience from various leadership roles in cricket administration.
In his statement upon taking charge, Shah expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him by the ICC directors and member boards. “I am honored to take on the role of ICC chairman. I am grateful for the support and trust of the ICC directors and member boards,” he said.
Shah’s journey in cricket administration began in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association, where he played a pivotal role in the construction of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the largest cricket stadium in the world. His innovative approach to infrastructure development set a new benchmark for cricket facilities globally.
In 2019, Shah made history by becoming the youngest Secretary of the BCCI, a position that catapulted him to prominence in international cricket. His tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including enhancing the financial stability of Indian cricket and fostering international collaborations.
He also served as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), where he was instrumental in promoting cricket across the Asian continent. His tenure as the Chairman of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee further solidified his reputation as a forward-thinking administrator with a keen eye on the commercial growth of the sport.
As ICC Chairman, Shah is expected to focus on expanding cricket’s global footprint. One of his primary goals is the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, a move that could significantly boost the sport’s popularity in non-traditional cricketing nations. His leadership is also likely to emphasize strengthening the ICC’s financial position, enhancing bilateral relations among member nations, and increasing grassroots participation in cricket worldwide.
Cricket analysts anticipate that Shah’s tenure will bring a fresh perspective to the ICC, with a focus on innovation, inclusivity, and sustainable growth. His vision aligns with the ICC’s broader objectives of making cricket a truly global sport, accessible and appealing to diverse audiences across the world.
