The Ministry of Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development has announced an increase in the daily supply of coconuts through Lak Sathosa to two lakh, starting tomorrow (October 9). This initiative aims to ensure a steady supply of coconuts to consumers, particularly in urban areas, including Colombo.
Each coconut will be priced at Rs. 130, continuing the government’s efforts to provide essential goods at regulated prices. Previously, Lak Sathosa sold one lakh coconuts daily. The coconuts are sourced from government-owned estates to address the high demand.
Recent heavy rains disrupted coconut production, leading to a temporary shortage. However, the ministry reports that the situation is improving, and production is expected to normalize soon.
Additionally, the ministry has assured the public that measures are in place to prevent shortages of essential items during the upcoming festive season, ensuring consistent availability across Sathosa branches.
