The Freedom People’s Council (FPC) has launched a scathing critique of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, accusing him of undermining democracy by postponing elections without legitimate justification. The council labeled this act as a “major corruption” and likened it to a “political abortion followed by financial and economic murder.”
The accusations were outlined in a letter authored by Dallas Alahapperuma, leader of the FPC, addressed to key figures including the President, the Opposition Leader, Members of Parliament, and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
In the letter, Alahapperuma alleged that Wickremesinghe’s actions not only violated democratic principles but also caused significant economic harm to the country. Titled “Pay the Price of Aborting Democracy: A Criminal Allegation Against President Ranil,” the letter detailed incidents that the FPC considers evidence of corruption and financial mismanagement.
The FPC urged the new administration, led by the current President, to hold the former leader and his associates accountable, describing them as “economic murderers.” The letter emphasized the need for restitution, suggesting that public tax funds allegedly squandered during Wickremesinghe’s tenure should be returned to the state.
The letter concluded with a call for the current government to use this opportunity to rewrite a “civilized and moral chapter” in the nation’s political history. It stressed the importance of addressing these allegations transparently to restore public trust and uphold democratic values.
This controversy adds to the growing political discourse surrounding the legacy of Ranil Wickremesinghe, highlighting tensions between the past administration and emerging political movements advocating reform and accountability.
