The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has announced the commencement of public consultations on the potential revision of electricity tariffs. The initiative follows a proposal submitted by the Sri Lanka Electricity Board (CEB) last Friday, December 6, outlining suggestions for tariff adjustments.
PUCSL Chairman, Professor K.B.L. Chandralal, stated that a comprehensive study on the matter has already been initiated. He emphasized the importance of incorporating public opinion into the decision-making process to ensure transparency and fairness.
The consultation process is set to formally begin in two weeks, allowing citizens to voice their perspectives on the proposed changes.
While the specifics of the CEB’s tariff revision proposal have not yet been disclosed, it is expected to address factors such as production costs, loan repayments, and the recent profitability of the electricity board.
This development comes in the context of growing public discourse on the affordability of electricity, particularly following the CEB’s decision not to issue employee bonuses this year, citing the prioritization of loan repayments and tariff reductions.
The final decision on the tariff revision will be made after a thorough review of the study findings and public feedback. The PUCSL aims to balance consumer affordability with the financial sustainability of the CEB, ensuring equitable outcomes for all stakeholders.
The public consultation marks a significant step in promoting inclusivity and accountability in policymaking, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing concerns over rising living costs.
