Venerable Rajangane Saddharathana Thero has expressed support for Minister Lalkantha’s recent remarks regarding the ongoing struggles caused by wild elephants in rural areas. The Thero emphasized that those living in affected regions understand the immense suffering caused by wild elephants and tamed elephant herds, a reality often overlooked by those outside these communities.
In a video statement, the Thero criticized animal rights activists who, according to him, misinterpret and sensationalize Minister Lalkantha’s comments. He accused these activists of shedding “crocodile tears” while ignoring the real hardships faced by villagers. He pointed out that when wild animals destroy farmland, these activists are not present to assist farmers in feeding their families or addressing their mounting debts.
Minister Lalkantha, acknowledging that the government lacks the financial resources to capture or manage wild elephant herds effectively, had advised people to take measures to protect themselves and mitigate the impacts of this issue. Saddharathana Thero defended this advice, stating that it was practical given the circumstances and aligned with the need for communities to free themselves from the challenges posed by wild animals.
The Thero concluded by calling for a more understanding and realistic approach to resolving human-wildlife conflicts, emphasizing the urgent need to address the plight of those directly affected.
