Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has stated that an increase in electricity tariffs is necessary, citing the rising costs of electricity generation over the past six months. Speaking at a press briefing, the minister explained that the growing reliance on fuel-powered plants has significantly driven up generation expenses, necessitating a tariff adjustment.
Jayatissa also acknowledged public concerns about the rising costs but assured that the situation is expected to improve in the next six months. He noted that with reduced reliance on fuel power plants and other cost-saving measures, electricity generation costs are anticipated to decline, paving the way for potential tariff reductions.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing electricity tariffs by 30–35% as promised. He emphasized that while immediate increases are unavoidable to manage operational costs, the government is working towards long-term affordability for consumers.
This statement comes amid broader discussions on balancing the financial sustainability of the electricity sector with the need to minimize the economic burden on households and businesses.
