Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Levan Dzhagaryan, has expressed optimism regarding President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government, emphasizing the potential for strengthened bilateral ties between the two nations.
Speaking to the media, Ambassador Dzhagaryan highlighted that while current relations are largely humanitarian, there is significant untapped potential for deeper cooperation across various sectors.
President Vladimir Putin has extended a message of congratulations to President Dissanayake on his new administration, which commands a two-thirds majority in Parliament. The message included an invitation for an official visit to Russia, signaling Russia’s readiness to enhance diplomatic and economic collaboration.
“Russia is ready for cooperation. The ball is in Sri Lanka’s court,” the ambassador stated, indicating that Sri Lanka’s willingness to engage will shape the future of bilateral ties.
Ambassador Dzhagaryan recalled a prior invitation extended to President Dissanayake to attend the BRICS Summit in Kazan, which the Sri Lankan leader was unable to attend. Despite this, recent discussions between the ambassador and President Dissanayake were described as productive and promising.
The ambassador stressed that while Russia acknowledges the new government’s vision and potential, its judgment will depend on tangible actions. “We hope that his government will pursue a balanced and positive policy. However, our evaluation will be based on practical actions, not slogans or pleasant words,” he remarked.
Russia has shown interest in expanding its cooperation with Sri Lanka, particularly in areas such as trade, energy, education, and defense. The ambassador’s statements suggest that Russia is keen to move beyond symbolic gestures and into substantive partnerships.
As Sri Lanka navigates its new political chapter, Russia’s engagement signals potential opportunities for strategic alignment, provided the Dissanayake administration translates its commitments into actionable policies.
