Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna MP and attorney Namal Rajapaksa has called for the resignation of government MPs who fail to provide proof of their educational qualifications. His statement follows the recent resignation of Speaker Ashoka Ranwala, who stepped down amid scrutiny over his academic credentials.
In a public message, Rajapaksa commended Ranwala for his decision, describing it as a courageous move towards fostering transparency in Parliament. He emphasized that such actions should set a precedent for others in positions of power.
“The resignation of Ashoka Ranwala is a commendable step, especially at a time when the integrity of public officials is under question,” Rajapaksa said. He added that the issue of MPs allegedly misrepresenting their qualifications undermines the trust of the people and contradicts President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s vision of maintaining a transparent and accountable government.
Rajapaksa also criticized certain ruling party MPs, specifically from the National People’s Power (NPP), for failing to address allegations of false claims about their educational backgrounds. He called on these individuals to either substantiate their qualifications or step down from their positions.
“As public representatives, it is our responsibility to uphold the trust placed in us by the people. MPs who cannot verify their educational qualifications should resign immediately,” Rajapaksa asserted.
This statement reflects growing public and political pressure to ensure accountability among government officials. Rajapaksa’s call comes amid a broader national debate on the ethical standards required of those in public office, especially as the government faces mounting criticism over transparency and governance issues.
