A representative of former Speaker Ashoka Ranwala is preparing to travel to Japan to retrieve his doctorate from Waseda University, a prestigious institution where he allegedly earned his degree before 2005.
The university, which does not provide online access to doctorate certificates awarded prior to 2005, requires the physical certificate to be collected in person. Therefore, Ranwala’s close associate will be traveling to Japan to secure the document.
The controversy surrounding the degree stems from the fact that Ranwala has been publicly listed as holding a doctorate, despite some questions raised regarding its authenticity. While the degree was awarded long before 2005, the university currently only issues online verification for doctorates obtained after that year, making the retrieval of the physical certificate crucial.
Sources close to the situation confirm that the doctorate will be brought back to Sri Lanka after the associate completes the necessary formalities in Japan.
