Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Nalin Bandara has announced plans to file a formal complaint with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) against Deputy Speaker Rizvi Salley, questioning his medical credentials.
Addressing the media, MP Bandara alleged that Rizvi Salley initially claimed to be a specialist doctor but now identifies as a general practitioner. The SJB MP expressed his intention to seek clarity on Salley’s qualifications through the SLMC and also plans to approach the Election Commission to challenge his position as a Member of Parliament.
According to Bandara, Salley’s case raises serious concerns about the authenticity of the credentials presented by several political figures. “We are hearing reports that not just Rizvi Salley, but many others elected from the National People’s Power (NPP) Party have falsified their academic and professional qualifications. This includes fake doctorate degrees, legal certifications, and medical qualifications,” Bandara alleged.
He further emphasized that the Deputy Speaker’s MP position should be revoked if discrepancies in his credentials are proven, asserting that such actions undermine the trust placed in elected officials.
This controversy follows closely on the heels of the recent uproar surrounding Ashoka Ranwala, who stepped down from the Speaker role after questions arose regarding his academic qualifications. These developments have sparked widespread debate about the need for greater scrutiny and transparency regarding the qualifications of public representatives in Sri Lanka.
The unfolding situation places further pressure on the Election Commission and other relevant authorities to investigate these allegations and take appropriate action to maintain public trust in the political system.
