Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al-Hasan has been banned from bowling in domestic and international cricket matches organized by national cricket associations approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the ban, which follows a similar suspension by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
The ban comes after Shakib was accused of delivering an illegal bowling action during a match in the English county cricket season last September. Following the allegations, Shakib was prohibited from bowling in any ECB-approved tournaments, prompting the need for further examination of his bowling action.
Shakib is currently playing in the Sri Lanka T10 series for the Goal Marvels team but has not bowled in the last two matches of the tournament. His participation in the tournament raised questions as the ban was enforced across all tournaments recognized by the ICC and national cricket bodies.
This decision adds another chapter to Shakib’s controversial career. While he retired from Test and T20 cricket in 2021, he remains a key player for Bangladesh in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Known for his all-round abilities, Shakib’s absence from bowling in international matches could impact Bangladesh’s squad in upcoming competitions.
The 36-year-old all-rounder has been one of the most celebrated players in Bangladesh cricket history, consistently performing across formats. He is currently undergoing the process to re-examine and correct his bowling action, which is a necessary step before being allowed to bowl again in official competitions.
Shakib’s suspension also highlights ongoing concerns in international cricket regarding the legality of bowling actions, with many players facing similar scrutiny in recent years.
