His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo, has voiced strong optimism regarding the ongoing investigation into the Easter Sunday bombings, reaffirming his belief that justice will eventually be served to the victims and their families. Speaking to journalists, Cardinal Ranjith expressed confidence that the current government is taking necessary steps to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation.
“The government has been consistently updating us on the progress of the investigations,” said Cardinal Ranjith. “This communication shows that they are committed to uncovering the truth behind this horrific act. It is clear that the government is conducting a transparent and thorough investigation into the massacre, which gives us hope.”
Cardinal Ranjith also acknowledged the government’s willingness to engage with religious leaders and affected communities during the process. “We are optimistic that justice will prevail and that those responsible for the bombings will be held accountable for their actions,” he added.
The Easter Sunday bombings, which took place on April 21, 2019, targeted churches and hotels across Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of over 250 people and hundreds more injured. The attacks were claimed by a local terrorist group, but the investigations have been mired in delays and political challenges.
In a sign of renewed government commitment to the investigation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, shortly after assuming office, visited St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, one of the worst-hit locations during the bombings. During his visit, he assured the victims and their families that the bombings would be thoroughly re-investigated, stressing that justice would be sought for those who suffered in the attacks.
The government has faced growing pressure from both local and international communities to bring the perpetrators to justice, and many hope that the renewed focus on the investigation will lead to the resolution of a case that has left the nation grieving and searching for answers.
