Former Minister Rajitha Senaratne has revealed that officials from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have confirmed the long-rumored white van abductions that occurred during the Rajapaksa regime. According to Senaratne, these victims were not only kidnapped but were also killed, dismembered, and their bodies thrown to crocodiles.
Speaking in an interview with an online media channel, Senaratne disclosed that a former personal security officer to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who later became the head of the CID, was deeply involved in concealing the truth surrounding these crimes. The former officer, Senaratne claims, actively worked to suppress the investigation into the white van abductions, which took place mainly in the aftermath of the 2009 civil war. This cover-up reportedly hindered any progress in bringing those responsible for the abductions and killings to justice.
Senaratne also criticized the interference in criminal investigations during the “Good Governance” period, a time when the government had pledged to address human rights violations and corruption. According to the former minister, the investigations into the disappearances were thwarted by various factions, including political figures who sought to obstruct justice. He specifically pointed to the corrupt practices of the then Chief Officer in charge of the Police Crime Division, who allegedly obstructed crucial investigations.
Despite the significant setbacks and obstacles faced by the CID, Senaratne emphasized that it was imperative for the government to continue its efforts to investigate these heinous crimes. He acknowledged that five years may not have been sufficient to fully address the extent of the white van abductions and other human rights abuses during the Rajapaksa era. However, he called for continued resolve to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable and that the victims’ families receive the justice they deserve.
Senaratne further remarked that the country’s progress in dealing with past atrocities depends on the political will and an unwavering commitment to truth and justice. He urged the current government to prioritize the completion of these investigations, citing the importance of bringing closure to the families affected by the abductions and the broader community.
